Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer going for an Evening Walk along Sønderstrand
Michael Ancher’s painting is a copy of one of P.S.Krøyer’s studies for the iconic picture from 1893, Summer evening at Skagen Sønderstrand (Skagens Museum). Krøyer made several studies for this picture, including two figure studies in which he focused on the two women, Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer, who are walking on the beach. Ancher had not asked Krøyer for permission to copy it, which is why he wrote to Krøyer in 1897: “You remember that I borrowed the small study with Anna and Marie on the beach to compare it to one of my pictures of women. When I came home in the summer, before you arrived, I got the urge, one rainy day, to copy it, and I did so, because I thought it would be fun to have it on the wall. If you don’t like it, I could always burn it”.
