You will be introduced to one of Denmark’s most famous artists’ colonies, which evolved in Skagen in the second half of the nineteenth century, and you will learn why this unique artists’ colony managed to create works of art that still fascinate, astonish, thrill, and touch today’s audience. You will hear about the artists’ work, their mutual relationships, and thoughts on contemporary artistic currents, and finally we will explore a few selected works. Walk through the town:
Experience Skagen through the eyes of the artists

This town walk starts at Skagens Museum and finishes at Anchers Hus. What was Skagen like, when the painters began to arrive in this small, remote area in the 1870s? Along the way, a learning curator from the Art Museums of Skagen explains what attracted and fascinated the artists, where they found their motifs, and their relationship with the local people of Skagen. Why did they come? What attracted them about the special light? And how well did the artists’ paintings of Skagen reflect the historical reality at the time? On this walk, which is about three kilometres long, we will find out why the artists were drawn to Skagen and dip into the history of the town and the local building traditions.
Practical information:
Max. 25 persons
Duration: 1 hour and 30 min.
Price: DKK 900 + admission if you would like to visit the museums before or after the town walk.
