The Legacy of the Anchers

The Ancher family’s private collection

With 249 rarely exhibited works of art from the archives af the artists’ home, this exhibition highlights the legacy of the Ancher family. These are works that have rarely been shown to the public.

9th September 2016 – 23th April 2017 | Skagens Museum

This exhibition will be showing a large number of works from the archives of the artist couple Michael and Anna Ancher’s home, Anchers Hus. In addition to the works by the couple, the collection includes paintings and drawings that they swapped, bought, or were given over the course of their lives by friends and colleagues from the artists’ colony in Skagen.

Most of the works by Anna and Michael Ancher were sketches or studies for some of the couple’s most famous paintings. Many of these masterpieces were sold by the couple, but over the years many of them found their way back to Skagen.

Skagens Museum is thus able to show many of the sketches alongside the final works, providing a fascinating insight into the artistic working process from idea to completed work.
